Getting It Booked In

When a door jumps its track, it usually stops moving mid-cycle or hangs crooked in the opening, and most people call the same day because a door stuck open is a door that won't lock. Tell us whether the door is open, closed, or stuck somewhere in between, and whether you hear a cable snap or just a grinding stop. That changes what we bring on the truck.

We cover the Albany area out to roughly a 15-mile radius, which puts us within reach of places like Rensselaer, Colonie, Latham, Troy, Cohoes, Guilderland, Schenectady, and Clifton Park, along with the city itself. Across that service area there are about 183,670 households and 74,272 owner-occupied houses, so we see this fault on a wide range of door ages and track styles, not just one neighborhood's setup.

If the door is off the track and the opener is still trying to pull it, shut the opener off at the wall before we get there. Running the motor against a jammed track is the fastest way to turn a one-hour fix into a new opener purchase.

How It Shows Up

An off-track door rarely looks the same way twice. Sometimes one side of the door has popped a roller clean out of the track and the panel hangs at an angle. Sometimes the whole door looks fine but won't budge because a roller has jumped the rail at a bend near the top. Other times it's subtler: the door closes but leaves a gap along one edge, or it shudders and reverses partway up.

A loud bang followed by the door sitting crooked usually means a cable let go or a spring broke and pulled the door sideways as it dropped. A slow drift off-track over weeks, where the door rubs the frame a little more each time, usually points to a track that's worked loose from the wall bracket rather than a sudden failure.

Either way, don't force it by hand and don't keep hitting the remote. A door under spring tension that's already off its rail can come down fast, and a track that's bent further by repeated attempts to close it often has to be replaced instead of straightened.

Why This Fails Locally

Most of the housing in this service area was built between 1938 and 1982, with a median build year around 1961, and the bulk of the stock across the 41 named areas we cover dates to the 1960s and '70s. Garages from that era were built for the doors of their day: single-piece slab doors or early sectional doors on tracks that were never engineered for the heavier insulated panels and stronger openers that often replace them now. When a homeowner swaps in a modern door but keeps the original track and brackets, the geometry is off from day one, and the door rides loose until it finally jumps the rail.

Albany also sits in a severe cold climate band, and that matters for tracks specifically. Steel brackets anchored into wood jambs decades ago loosen as the wood contracts and expands through hard freeze-thaw cycles each winter. A bracket that's backed out even an eighth of an inch lets the track flex sideways every time the door runs, and a door that flexes the track eventually rides off it. This is a track problem tied to old hardware and cold winters, not something that shows up the same way in a milder climate or a newer garage.

How We Fix It

First we check whether the track is just bent or whether the mounting brackets have pulled away from the jamb, because those are two different repairs. A track that's bent at a single point can often be straightened or swapped out in a section. A track that's bowed along its whole length, or crushed where a roller forced it apart, gets replaced rather than bent back into shape - hammering a track straight is a short-term fix that fails again within months.

We reset the rollers into the track, check the door is square in the opening, and re-torque every bracket back into solid framing, adding new anchor points if the original wood has split. If the door came off-track because a cable or spring let go, we deal with that first since the door isn't safe to run until it's back under proper tension.

One limit worth knowing: if the door panel itself got bent or cracked when it came off the rail, straightening the track won't fix that. A bent panel on an otherwise sound door sometimes means replacing just that section, and on older doors where panels aren't made anymore, that can mean replacing the whole door instead of patching one piece.

Frequently asked questions

Can I push the door back onto the track myself?

We don't recommend it. A door off its track is still under spring tension, and pushing on it can pull it down suddenly or bend the track further. Shut off the opener at the wall, leave the door where it is, and call. It's a quick fix for us when the track and brackets are still in reasonable shape.

Why did my door come off the track with no warning?

Usually it wasn't actually sudden. A bracket anchored in older wood framing loosens gradually, especially after repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and the track flexes a little more each winter until a roller finally jumps the rail. The bang you hear is the end of that process, not the start of it.

Is this covered by the age of my door, or is it the track?

Usually the track and brackets, not the door panel. A lot of homes in this area have had the original door replaced at some point, but the track and wall anchors from the 1960s or '70s build often stayed in place and weren't sized for the newer door's weight.
